The Australian Immigration system is a point based system in which there are various criteria that an applicant must fulfill to achieve the threshold score and be eligible for the Immigration Program.

 
SKILLED INDEPENDENT VISAS

This visa is an offshore permanent visa which is available to all independent applicants from outside Australia , as well as to New Zealand citizens who are in Australia , who are not sponsored. Skilled independent visa, as the name implies is available to those applicants who do not have appropriate relative to sponsor them or can meet requirements without necessity for sponsorship. It is designed to attract young, skilled, English speaking migrants who will be of long term benefit to Australia .

 
Applicants for this category of visa will be assessed against the threshold point requirement. Those who reach pass mark can be expected to be granted the visa, while those who reach the pool mark may have to wait for 2 years until a decision is made for their application.
 

The basic requirement for this visa is as follows:

 
Age
Applicants must be at least 18 years old and younger than 45 at the time of application.
 
English Language

If their nominated occupation is a trade, applicants must have at least VOCATIONAL level of English. (IELTS score of at least 5 band in each module).

In any other case, applicants must have at least COMPETENT level of English. (IELTS score of at least 6 band in each module)

 
Nominated Occupation

Applicants must nominate an occupation from the Skilled Occupation List (SOL). Once applicants nominate an occupation, they must have their skills assessed by a government appointed Australian Assessing Authority in order to determine if their skills are appropriate for this visa type.

 
Qualifications

Applicants must have either University degree or Diploma or trade qualifications. In some occupation, related work experience will be sufficient.

 
Recent Work Experience

Applicants are required to have recent work experience in their nominated occupation. For Australian students this requirement is waived. In some categories a person with less work experience may be eligible.

It is a criterion for the grant of this visa that the visa applicants pass the threshold points eligibility, where the points are awarded for the certain characteristics.

SKILLED REGIONAL SPONSORED VISA

The Skilled Regional Sponsored Visa is a provisional/temporary visa, which enables you to live and work in the sponsoring State in a prescribed area.

 
This visa is valid for three (3) years. After living in the sponsoring state for two (2) years and working full time in paid employment in any occupation for 12 months, you will be eligible to apply for permanent residency with DIAC. Full time is at least 35 hours per week. You can also have two part time jobs to meet the 35 hours per week requirement.
 
This visa needs State or Relative Sponsorship. To qualify for the State Sponsorship, different States have different criteria. They normally see the Financial Resources, English Language, Occupation, Work History, Commitment to live and work in the State etc. This means that the IELTS requirements should be met before in most cases.
 
The basic requirements are:

IELTS score of at least 5 band in each module for trades occupation.

IELTS score of at least 6 band in each module for non-trades occupation.

Some of the States have participated in the Concessional English Language Program. If you have an average band of 5.5 in IELTS (Overall 5.5), you can obtain the State Sponsorship by paying the English Language Tution Fees.

SKILLED SPONSORED VISAS

Applicants for this class of visa will be assessed on the basis of a points test. Those who achieve the threshold score can be expected to be granted the visa, while those who reach the pool mark but not the pass mark remain in the pool until they are removed.
